So, McCain just made it even more interesting.
I am not a political person. I get most of my political news from Comedy Central, namely from Jon Stewart and Lewis Black. Seems like most every election in my past, I've voted against a candidate more than for one. And when I turned on The Daily Show this week, my first question to DH was "Hey, why are they in Denver?" (I do have a newborn, after all - I'm lucky to take a shower and brush my teeth every day, let alone follow the DNC.)
But this? This is exciting. It's going to be a fun ride, whatever happens.

six weeks post-partum
Here I am, six weeks post-partum, and I have to say that things are going well. I knew I wanted to be a mother, had a feeling that I'd enjoy it, but had no clue that I'd fall in love with Motherhood so completely. Every day is something new, Baby G changes so quickly. Three days ago he still fit in his newborn clothes. Yesterday I had to put them away, and the next size up fits him perfectly where it was comically too large for him last week.
I am sad that he's growing so fast, that this time is flying by. But I'm excited to see who he's becoming as more and more of his personality becomes apparent.
He's much more interactive now. He reaches for toys - still moving in random flaylings, but with more deliberation. We have a bouncer with an arch of interactive elements on it. I have it set up so that when you hit the monkey or the parrot it lights up and plays music. If you're not hitting the animals, it's quiet. He played with that for about half an hour this morning, making it light up and make noise. Every time it played a song, his little legs started moving like crazy. I don't know if he was dancing, or just excited, but it was adorable either way.
He's starting to mimic faces. I'll hold him up to my face, about 8" away, and stick out my tongue. He'll look at me, and before long his little tongue is moving. This game only lasts for a few seconds, as his attention span is still rather short, but it's amazing to see this little person who was so recently non-reactive start to interact with me, take notice of his surroundings, and get excited when he makes an impact on his environment.
And I'm feeling pretty good. Still a bit achey and sore, and my joints still feel like I'm about 70 years old, but I'm moving around and gaining more energy every day. Baby G is sleeping for longer stretches at night most nights, which sometimes gives me up to three or four hours in a row of sweet, blessed sleep. We're getting the hang of nursing, and that's going much better than at the start. And now that we've learned how to use the sling, I'm able to get out and about during the day, running errands and going shopping. DH and I even managed to take in a movie this weekend! Baby G slept through most of it, and I was able to nurse him in the dark when he did wake up.
Sometimes I miss being pregnant. I miss feeling those kicks from inside. I miss having Baby G all to myself. I miss the way I looked pregnant, seeing myself in profile and enjoying the view. I miss not having to shave my legs every other day - for some reason that hair just would not grow, and I shaved once a month at the most. I never had to clean my hairbrush, either, as I wasn't shedding at all. Now I have to clean my brush once a week, I'm shedding like a nervous cat. I miss not having to carry in the groceries. ;-)
But I do NOT miss the morning sickness, the food aversions, the sciatic pain. I'm enjoying sleeping on my back again. I can squeeze past the portable dishwasher when it's hooked up to our kitchen sink. I can see my feet. And somehow, between the morning sickness and the food aversions and the gestational diabetes and the not-eating-because-I-have-a-newborn, I've managed to lose 60 lbs since I first became pregnant, so as I'm going through the process of getting my regular clothes out of storage, I'm finding things that haven't fit me for years that now fit me perfectly. And let me tell you, the only thing more fun than going shopping and finding that perfect outfit is finding old clothes that fit again.
Baby G just woke up, and so now I'm sitting at my keybord with a baby in my lap. My baby, my son. My very own baby head to smell, baby neck to nuzzle, baby grunts and squeaks to cherish. We waited a long time for this, and it was well worth it. I am in love, and already I can barely remember life without this little man.
